Northland Wine Trail, Russell, Bay Of Islands, New Zealand

The very first vines in New Zealand were planted in the Bay Of Islands by missionaries in the early 1800’s. Then came the Croatian Gumdiggers to Northland, bringing the European winemaking tradition. Since then the area has thrived and now boasts over 15 reputable vineyards near the  Bay Of Islands Beach House Loft, a self contained accommodation within easy driving distance from popular Northland wineries. The sweeping beaches and beautiful bays, has earned it’s name, “ Mediterranean of the South Pacific”.
The quality regional white wines include tropical Chardonnays, Pinot Gris and Viogniers. The consistently great award winning reds include Syrahs, Pinotage, Montepulciano, Merlot and Chambourcin.
Many of these local Bay Of Islands wineries not only offer cellar door tastings but also have vineyard restaurants where they showcase the beautiful regional seafood, lamb and beef and a diverse range of Farmer’s market produce to compliment your wine tasting experience.
Your hosts at the Bay Of Islands Beach House Loft will supply Northland Wine Trail Maps and our best winery recommendations.  One of our local favorites, Omata Estates Winery is within walking/kayaking distance!
